Insurance

1. Why do I need insurance?
Studying abroad is an exciting opportunity, but unexpected health issues can arise.
No one plans to get sick or injured, which is why having insurance before you leave your home country is crucial. It gives you peace of mind and ensures you’re prepared for unexpected expenses.

Healthcare costs abroad can add up quickly:
    • A doctor’s visit and prescription: $150
    • A hospital emergency visit: $1,000+
    • Daily hospitalization: $3,200 per day
    • A 10-day hospital stay: $35,000+

Investing in insurance now can protect you from significant financial strain and stress later. It’s a small cost for a big safety net.

2. Who can apply for GuardMe insurance?
International Students: Those studying abroad in a foreign country.

Study Abroad Participants: Students enrolled in exchange or short-term study programs.

Teachers, Faculty, and Staff: Educators and academic staff involved in international programs.

Exchange Programs and Camps: Participants in cultural or educational exchange programs, as well as camp attendees.

Co-ops, Internships, and Work Projects: Individuals engaged in work-study programs or professional placements.

Trainees: Those participating in training programs related to international education.

Dependents and Immediate Family Members: Family members of insured students, provided the student is also covered under guard.me.

3. Who are considered the immediate family members of a student?
Wife, Husband, Son, Daughter, Stepchildren, Foster child, Partner, Civil partner, Fiancé and Fiancée.

4. Can I cancel my policy?
Multi-Risk Premium Product: Cancellations and refunds are allowed only if the policy has not yet started. Once the policy is active, cancellations or refunds are no longer possible.

Multi-Risk Premium + Cancellation and Travel Plus Cancellation Products: Cancellations and refunds are not available for these products. They become active immediately upon issuance and cannot be canceled or refunded.

Medical

1. Do I need to call GuardMe before I go to the Hospital?

You don’t need to call before visiting the emergency department. However, you may choose to contact us so we can coordinate with the hospital regarding payment.

If you are admitted to the hospital (for an overnight stay or longer), it is important to call us as soon as possible.

2. Will I be asked to pay for the medical services?
Some clinics, doctors, or hospitals may require you to pay upfront for the services you receive. This is common, and hospitals will often request payment at the time of service. For example, the average cost of visiting an emergency department starts at approximately $1,000.

If you are asked to pay, you have two options:

      1. Pay for the services directly.
      2. Ask the hospital to send you an invoice by mail.

Once you have the invoice or payment receipt, you can submit a claim to guard.me to be reimbursed for eligible expenses. Be sure to keep copies of all documents for your personal records.

For more details, refer to the section "Claim Process”

Claims

1. What is an original receipt or bill/invoice?

An invoice or receipt is the document provided by the doctor or hospital at the time of your visit. It lists the charges for your treatment and any payments you’ve made.

IMPORTANT:
For prescription medications (obtained from the pharmacist at the back counter in a pharmacy or drugstore), you must submit the official prescription receipt. This receipt must include:

      1. Your name
      2. The prescribing doctor’s name
      3. The name of the medication
      4. The DIN (Drug Identification Number)

2. Does the doctor need to fill out or sign my Claim Form?

If You Paid for Medical Services: You can complete and sign the Claim Form yourself. A doctor’s signature is not required in this case.

If the Doctor is Billing guard.me Directly: The doctor must complete and sign the Claim Form.

3. When should I submit my Claim?

Submit your claim as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days after the date of your first medical expense.
